Really?

Ever notice how married folks sometimes speak a little differently to their “single friends?”  I am one of those “single friends” and let me tell ya there have been some real doozies!  They often speak with a cocked head and consoling voice.  To be fair, there are a few people who try really hard to be sensitive to the “condition” of the single person.  These are usually people who married a little later in life, so they understand what it feels like to be a grown up single. But even then once the ring is on the finger, the filter clogs and they forget what they ever knew about how it feels to be single.
Once these, we’ll call them previously singles, get married it is as if they have always been so; like they were born that way.  Now again some try and they try hard, but they struggle.  The statements still come out.  These are some of my favorite statements:
“Don’t worry he’s out there somewhere.”  Great.  Anyone know where?  Is he lost?  Should we be worried?  Is knowing that he’s out there somewhere supposed to help the fact that I still don’t know where?
“It takes just one.” Great!  I have been looking for a set of five.
“Maybe you are being too picky.”  Really.  That’s what you think is the problem.  Do you think instead I should just settle for whoever will take me? Is that what you did?  No? But I should? Thanks for the boost of confidence!!
“Well, you’re both single so I thought you might hit it off.”  Sure.  Because all of us single folks like all the same things. And we’d all fit together just fine if we could just bump into each other or better yet have you point it out.
“Man I wish I was in your shoes!”  Do you?  Do you really? Because you’re always trying to find me a husband.
“Was there anything you liked about him? Yes, he picked up the check.
“Don’t worry, my 60 year old aunt never got married and she’s amazing.” This one I can’t even touch.
“I just can’t understand how you don’t have men beating down your door to marry you.” Talk to my therapist, she’ll clear it up for you!
